Notes on Authority II

– An efficient cause is the first ordering of a thing to its first good, namely existence. Fatherhood then is the principal, natural qand paradigmatic form of authority. All other authority seems to be secondary or derivative.

– A father is the first natural author and authority of his son. The artificer is the first authority of an artifact.

– Ownership does not arise from generation but from competence. The rational animal is capable of ordering a thing to ends and higher ends than an inanimate or brute is capable of on its own. Brutes and children do not own things as they lack the capacity to do so.
